FROM POLITICS TO NEW SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINES: WOMEN’S AND GENDER HISTORY The contemporary Serbian historiography and concepts of women’s emancipation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries

Abstract

The Feminist theory and praxis had come a long way through the last decades of the 20th century. The powerful uplift of the Feminist political movement in Western Europe and America had produced yet another academic historical discipline, the Feminine history. Although the same aimed at reexamining the basic vocation postulates,it soon enough proved to be insufficient for true analysis of position of women in various societies and eras. Subsequent to severe debates and controversies, the category of Gender was accepted as an analytical category by means of which, as it was assumed, it would have been possible to determine how relations of power, different gender roles and tasks of men and women have been built in society. This proved to be particularly useful for the analysis within the modern national states of the 19th and 20th centuries. The fact remains that the programs of vast majority of political parties in European states

in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, including The Kingdome of Serbia, did not raise questions on position of women. They were not either considered in the field represented as the domain of public political interest, except on rare occasions when

polemics on determination of sufficient level in male and female education were taking place. Nevertheless, it is certain by all means that the questions of gender and gender relations were present in the politics of different kinds and that these are “readable” on the basis of other sources. In the last decade of the 20th and at the beginning of the 21st century, the papers have been arising in Serbian Historiography, mostly dedicated to the

history of women as an individual “entity” but very few within which gender relations and gender roles from the past of the Serbian society were analyzed. By analyzing at least one of the segments, such as the concept of women’s emancipation in the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century which appeared in the public discourse of the time, it is possible to obtain deeper insight into political and social history of Serbia.
